February 15th 2012 Emerald Gardens Pond and garden Seminars This spring we will be holding seminars on great pond and garden topics. Guest speakers will be invited to promote themselves and their products each week. These seminars are geared for novices and experts offering everyone a chance learn. Seminars are Free. Seating is limited but plenty of standing room. Rain or Shine. All seminars start at 12:00 noon until April. Seminar Schedule Look at This weeks Seminar Don't miss it at 12:00 noon Rain or Shine February 18th Arid Plant Dish Gardens Rick Vandyke will give a presentation on the selection, design and planting of succulent and cactus dish gardens. Rick has many years experience with common and exotic cacti and succulents and will educate us what varieties work best and are compatible. He will discus proper lighting and watering and also show off some of his intricate and unusual ceramic planters and pottery. Rick will be offering pottery and dish gardens for sale just before and after his talk. These one of a kind planters are worth the trip on Saturday . February 25th Austin Tree Selection and Growing Trey Wyatt of Cedar Creek Tree Farm will discuss shade tree location, pruning and planting techniques. Trey will go over the best trees for our area with comments on growth rates and eventual size. Learn why the origins of tree nursery stock can make a big impact on growth and success. March 3rd Re-establishing lawns Learn the best practices for getting old tired or dead lawns to look their best with emphasis on better grass choices, soil amendments and the proper amount of sun, water and fertilizer for a lush lawn. March 10th Lawn Alternatives for Austin Learn what other options are out there for lawn replacement, both ground covers and alternative mulch materials will be discussed as well as costs for installation and any necessary maintenance. March 17th Dry Shade Gardening Presented by our favorite horticultural expert Alexis Bearer. Alexis will discuss design aspects of shade gardening in Austin and will introduce you to many well adapted shade plants she has grown over the years. Alexis's landscape company Garden Witch is available for design and installation . Bring your note pads you wont want to forget a thing. Watch as tropical lilies are re-potted and propagated. Discover the beauty of a Tropical and the best varieties for Austin area. Learn their origins and hybrids. April 21st Pond Equipment See what pond equipment is necessary for a healthy pond, learn what works and what doesn't. Find out the difference between brands and price points. We will cover pumps, Skimmers, Ultra Violet lights, Biological filters, Mechanical filters, Pond liners and More. April 28th Austin Hardy Agave's Come learn which agave's are winter hardy for our area. We cover specie sizes and planting locations. Learn how to build a rock garden and what plants work with agave's. See how agave's can be used to accent large areas and how to mass plant agave like plants.
