Sounds of Chicago’s Lakefront: History of popular outdoor concerts in Grant Park

Chicago’s front yard has an astonishing history of cultural events, gatherings and
celebrations. One of the most treasured and long-standing lakefront traditions is
the Grant Park Music Festival.

Tony Macaluso, author of the book Sounds of Chicago’s Lakefront: A Celebration of
the Grant Park Music Festival will talk about the Festival’s long, fascinating history
including the strange tale of how the Festival was born in 1935, as well as providing
anecdotes about some of of the many great artists who performed with the Festival
over the years, and exploring how it intersected with larger historic events such
as the Great Depression, WWII, the Cold War, protests of the 1960s and marvelous
resurgence of downtown Chicago, culminating in the creation of Millennium Park.
The talk will also feature many never-before published historic Chicago photographs.
