SPECTREFEST 2015:
Sun Choke (L.A. premiere w/ Barbara Crampton, Sarah Hagan, Sara Malakul Lane & Dir. Ben Cresciman in person!) + A Live Set before the film by Boom Bip!)

Followed by a live set by Boom Bip!
A film firmly rooted in the tried and true tradition of House of Psychotic Women, Sun Choke places ambiguity above all and revels in it via an unreliable narrator who’s a murderer, some perverse form of an epileptic and an adept manipulator.Sarah Hagan stars in the film, as a severely damaged, borderline-autistic girl being cared for (held hostage by?) by her lifelong Nanny (Barbara Crampton) while the absent father figure is overseas for work. As mystery and abstraction certainly highlight this film’s strongest assets, going into plot description seems crass and egregious. With lovely cinematography (including some delectable images of grotesquerie), solid performances all around, a haunting and ephemeral score by Bryan Hollen (Boom Bip) and a tight, yet fiercely open and illusive screenplay, Sun Choke is certainly one of the best pieces of intrigue hitting cinemas this year.Dir. Ben Cresciman, 2015, DCP, 90 min.

SPECTREFEST PRESENTS UNSEEN! UNSCREENED!! OBSCENE!!! L.A. PREMIERES OF UNKOWN 20TH CENTURY TERROR RAGERS:
HACK-O-LANTERN & SLIME CITY double feature (w/ cast & filmmakers in attendance)!

RIDE THE BLADE!! From hallucinogenic 3D nightmarescapes to guitar-shredding Satanists to cannibalistic mutant infants, SpectreFest now reaches into the endless vortex of anti-human film to present DEBUT L.A. SCREENINGS (and a few WORLD premieres!) of the most criminally under-rated and overdriven movies of the ’60s through ’80s. This six-film weekend is a relentlessly entertaining annihilistic bloodride through the hallowed history of subversive masterpieces, presented by their creators and hitting Hollywood’s big screen for the first – and maybe ONLY – time EVER!
(Curated and presented by Zack Carlson from Bleeding Skull! Video / Fantastic Fest.)
We’re kicking off our half-dozen horrors with a double feature of under-appreciated, black-hearted creature screechers from 1988. Whether you’re hungry for hellfire or thirsting for gratuitous goop, this dual blast of late ’80s hate-rage will satisfy your unholy needs to the infinite megamax:Massacre Video presents HACK-O-LANTERNWest Coast Premiere! Not available on DVD!Stars Gregory Scott Cummins, Producer Raj Mehrotra and additional cast in attendance!THE UNSUNG APEX OF HEAVY METAL HORROR! Young Tommy is visited by his grandfather (Hy Pyke), a devil-worshipping pumpkin salesman who hands him a mystical amulet. Fifteen years later, the boy has grown into a rock-obsessed junior hellmaster, still under the thumb of his oppressive, occult grandpap. Tommy’s misanthropic individuality is illustrated by a distaste for shirts, a pickled fetus shrine, and Dio-flavored voodoo hallucinations. Tommy’s all-out war with his family, the townspeople and himself will reach a crescendo when innocents are doomed to Hell-flavored slaughter on Halloween night! Like the best movies of its era, HACK-O-LANTERN is a triumph of limited means. The gore is powerfully presented, the production quality is inexplicably strong and a few of the performances are worthy of some kind of major award; especially from lead Gregory Scott Cummins and camera-lovin’ superham Hy Pyke. The latter was a brilliant, screen-chewing spazz who unleashed similar gumption via small roles in frugal features like SLITHIS and LEMORA: A CHILD’S TALE OF THE SUPERNATURAL. As the satanic, incest-obsessed Gramps, Pyke is given his first starring role and takes it to an illogical zenith, completing an ideal explosion of ’80s SatanoRage!Dir. Jag Mundhra, 1988, 35mm, 87 minSLIME CITYL.A. Premiere! Original Extended Cut, not available on DVD!Director Gregory Lamberson and Star Robert C. Sabin in attendance!Learn the ancient occult secrets of flesh control with NYC’s greatest unheralded scum opera! Upright student Alex has just moved into a suspiciously affordable Brooklyn apartment, where his elderly landladies spend their evenings chugging day-glo fluid in the basement, and his metalhead neighbor has relentless sex with shrieking men. Soon, Alex is caught up in the mysterious hysteria, and begins transforming into a dripping, ripping, bandaged cannibal psychopath. This fearlessly goopy sewer train drags us down the same pulsating passageways as revered classics BASKET CASE and STREET TRASH, but was shot on 16mm by a pioneering filmmaker with an empty wallet and a skull full of impossible ideas. All of them are brought vividly to life in a protoplasmic rain of mayhem, witchery, lust, autonomous body parts and neon slime. Featuring one of the most shocking, outrageous finales of any gore film, SLIME CITY is the ultimate in hyper-advanced bleccchh!Dir. Gregory Lamberson, 1988, 16mm, 87 min

THE SILENT TREATMENT:
The Star of the Sideshow + The Sideshow

Feat. live accompaniment from Cliff Retallick!
The Star of the SideshowA Thanhouser Company production, following a troupe of sideshow circus performers!Dir. Lucius Henderson, 1912, 35mm, approx. 10 min. SideshowWith humble origins as a cheaply produced feature for Columbia Pictures-prior to It Happened One Night, back when the company was struggling, churning out gimmicky low-budget films destined for the shortest of runs-The Sideshow, though rarely screened, has remained noteworthy particularly for its “rare presentation of a little person in a sympathetic and adult role” (Richard Hildreth). It’s a tale of competition between two circus troupes, starring “Little Billy” Rhodes as the circus owner for the audience to root for, with a romantic twist thrown in-he longs for former chorus girl Marie Prevost-in this rare presentation!!Dir. Erle C. Kenton, 1928, 35mm, 70 min.

THE MASK (1961) in 3D

Kino Lorber presents THE MASK (1961) in 3DU.S. Premiere of new restoration! Not (yet) available on DVD!Cinefamily’s unmissable first-ever 3D screening is also the most otherworldly adventure that you’ll have in a theater this century. A brain-unraveling onslaught of indelibly surreal segments from another dimension punctuate a psychotic Canadian death noir, all of which causes the viewer to dissolve into a lobotomized puddle of metaphysically annihilated sweat. Images from legendary nightmare-maker THE MASK have long been synonymous with the outbreak of ’60s art/horror weirdness that included filmmakers like Coffin Joe and JIGOKU’s Nobuo Nakagawa. But very few people have been able to experience THE MASK for themselves. Now, thanks to the efforts of restorationists Robert Furmanek and Greg Kintz – both of whom will be on hand for this show – we will be the FIRST U.S. AUDIENCE since 1961 to undergo the permanent psychological transformation that affects anyone who dares view the terrors of THE MASK IN 3D. (Admission includes your own Magic Mystic Mask 3D viewer!)Dir. Julian Roffman, 1961, DCP, 83 min

“NIGHT” NIGHT! : NIGHT FEEDER, NIGHT WARS and TWISTED NIGHTMARE Triple Feature!
Bleeding Skull! Video presents NIGHT FEEDERL.A. Premiere! Never available on U.S. VHS or DVD!Producer Jody Gillerman in attendance!A hateful and massively enjoyable shot-on-video darkwave horror blast from the leather-clad armpits of the Bay Area. This gore-scarred, creature-fueled whodunnit culminates in one of the most rewarding slasher reveals in camcorder history, but the journey is every bit as powerful. Especially when the singer of coal-hearted gothpunk combo The Nuns stares directly into the camera and croons: “You SLIT your WRISTS. You fuckin’ BITCH.” A staggering celebration of drugs, fear and new wave rage, Night Feeder was completed at the tail end of San Francisco’s robust post-punk era and was only ever released on PAL-format VHS in Poland. Featuring effects that rival Hollywood’s best gore-monsterwork, it’s a nasal, vicious battle cry and one of the best homemade horror films you’ll ever see, hands down.Dir. Jim Whiteaker, 1988, Video from 1in masters, 86 minDavid A. Prior memorial screening: NIGHT WARS World Theatrical Premiere!Never available on DVD! Ted Prior (DEADLY PREY; SLEDGEHAMMER) in attendance! Not only was writer/director/producer David A. Prior the self-propelled genius behind genuinely groundbreaking films like SLEDGEHAMMER, KILLER WORKOUT and HFS favorite DEADLY PREY, but he was likely the most prolific force of the video era. In the dozen years from 1983 to 1995, he directed 26 (!!!) features, ALL of which were wildly entertaining, explosive, and true to his unique vision of masculine action and horror. He’s survived by his brother and collaborator Ted Prior, who will join us tonight to present one of their most unusual films – in its only know 35mm print – NIGHT WARS! It’s a rampagingly creative convergence of A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET and FULL METAL JACKET, as two Vietnam veterans lock, load, and enter the world of fully automatic dreamworld combat. Beyond the wall of sleep is a sadistic, supernatural hellwarrior who’s holding their friends hostage in a P.O.W. camp of his own nefarious, inhuman design. Though half the action takes place in the slumberzone, this one’s ALL WAR and NO SNORE! FIRE IN THE HOLE!!Dir. David A. Prior, 1988, 35mm, 88 min.TWISTED NIGHTMAREWest Coast Premiere! Not available on DVD!An unclean scream dream of undiluted hysteria! Shot in 1982 and not released until a VHS run in 1987, TWISTED NIGHTMARE fearlessly/senselessly combines the base elements of every ’80s horror film into a blazing tornado. Slashers, specters, sex, vengeance, jacuzzis, weaponry, wraparound sunglasses and white cotton briefs rule the endless night as a gaggle of loathsome party turds invade an abandoned campground in a seemingly deliberate kamikaze death run. Full of ambition and free of reason, TWISTED NIGHTMARE is the ultimate crowd-pleasing study in giving the people what they want… as long as they don’t want a coherent plot. However, if they desire a non-stop barrage of homicide, hatred and supernatural payback, this movie’s the equivalent of force-feeding butter to a fat kid. TONIGHT, WE PUKE AND EXPLODE.Dir. Paul Hunt, 1982/1987, 35mm, 84 min.

HANGOVER MATINEES:
The Thin Man

Start your holiday drinking a few months early with The Thin Man, W.S. Van Dyke’s screwball adaptation of Dashiell Hamett’s novel, a blend of noir and slapstick, “a drawing room comedy with dead bodies” (Roger Ebert). Featuring the electric rapport of  William Powell and Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles (with dialogue penned by real-life couple Albert Hackett and Frances Goodrich), The Thin Man is zany and unpredictable, like a great bender. Nick is brought out of retirement during the holidays to solve an elusive murder mystery, casually playing everyone around him with a beverage in hand, boasting a superhuman ability to imbibe unceasingly. Boasts the iconic Asta (aka Skippy), in one of the best canine performances ever put to celluloid, to boot!
Dir W.S. Van Dyke, 1934, 35mm, 91min

*Due to unforeseen circumstances, Steve Moore will not be able to attend in person.
SpectreFest and Cinefamily have long been lovers of the live score. But heretofore, we’ve never endeavored to put new music to a contemporary film. After all, what to do with all that dialogue? Then it hit us – why not just cut out all the talky parts to revel in the beautiful visuals of a modern, special effects tour-de-force, then hand it over to one of our favorite composers to put it all in a blender and see what comes out?Synth master and newly minted film composer-of-the-hour Steve Moore will have his way with the flying, fighting and crystal caves of the seminal Superman films of the 1980s, his emotional melodies soaring to heavens along with the late great Christopher Reeve for what we’re certain will be an experiential, musical-cinema event to invoke all of the awe and wonder the man in the red cape brought to our lives so many years ago. Goodnight Mommy (Encore Shows)
Oct. 12th. 13th & 14th

Severin Fiala & Veronika Franz’ taut and brutal film begins with twin brothers frolicking through the idyllic Austrian countryside in a final expression of childhood innocence, before a relentless sense of creeping fear takes hold. Their mother has returned home, following an unspoken horrific event, but mommy-wrapped in a nightmarish mask of gauze and bandages-seems different…
A treat for fans of extreme horror and art house cinema, and an exercise in resilience for everyone else, Goodnight Mommy gets under your skin like a malevolent, eerily patient little parasite, and taking its sweet time as it fills you with dread.Dir.
