Join the Greensgrow Winter CSA!

Early Bird Discount $15 Off Until October 16*
As the fall gets into full swing, we are enjoying the arrival of all the autumn plenty and planning for the cooler months ahead. The Fresh Food team has been meeting with farmers all season to plan for the Winter CSA. You can become a member online now and get $15 off for the season! We hope we will see you this winter!

Eating locally doesn’t have to end with the summer season. You can support the local economy, farmers and producers, reduce your carbon footprint, and enjoy our region’s produce, dairy and more from December-April. Greensgrow’s Fresh Food Team searches out and meets with our network of farmers and producers to plan our winter shares. We source from small farms in PA, NJ, and Delaware, occasionally extending into New York during the winter. We make adjustments each year in response to the changes in the local food supply and input from our members, growers, friends, and staff.

What’s in the share? You can get a vegan, veggie or meat share in the winter. Members will enjoy fall crops like apples, pears, radishes, winter squash, potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, carrots, cabbage, parsnips, beets, and other tubers; greenhouse-grown microgreens, herbs, and lettuces; local mushrooms; and greens like kale, Swiss chard, spinach, and fennel grown by our farmer friends (look forward to asparagus in the spring!). You will also receive some IQF (individual quick frozen) fruits and vegetables, like Jersey blueberries, or New York State sweet corn. Meat shares receive a local meat item each week — think smoked turkey breast, grass fed beef, or chicken sausages. Rounding out the share is your choice of local milk, tofu, seitan, yogurt, butter, or eggs. Occasionally, we like to throw a fun, locally made item into the share, like Greensgrow-made summer strawberry jam or tomato sauce; or items from favorite Philly-area producers of honey, pasta, cheese, grits or cider.

Options! Artisan Cheese • Locally Roasted Coffee
You can add on options like locally made artisan cheese or a coffee share from one of our favorite Philly roasters. New this season is the Soup & Bread Share for those busy folks out there who want to eat more great local foods, but may not have the time to make soup!

NEW! Soup & Bread Share
Each pickup from December-April (10 pickups), you’ll receive 2 quarts of soup from the Good Spoon Soupery and a sourdough baguette from Philly Bread. This is a very tasty bread perfect for eating with soup, made by our favorite sourdough fermenter and baker with partially freshly milled wheat. You know their awesome english muffins from the farmstand. The soups will be meatless, a mix of vegetarian and vegan. You’ll receive 2 different types made using fresh local ingredients of the highest quality. A few examples of the type of soups; Rustic Lentil with Kale & Potato, Smokey Black Bean, Truffle Cauliflower, Mushroom Veloute, Butternut Squash with Apples, Curried Red Lentil.

We hope you will join us this winter as we navigate the ever changing landscape of growing, preserving, and sourcing local food!

Greensgrow is your one stop shop for your Autumn plantings and entryway/outdoor decorating. The Mums are ready to pop open in shades of white to deep red, and all colors in between. The fall grasses look lovely, along with the Millet and sweet scented Pansies. Ornamental Peppers, Cabbages, and Kales add texture and fun to your creations. Pumpkins are in stock- Carvers, Edibles (think pie, muffins, breads, ravioli, the sky is the limit), and Fancy Decorative Pumpkins in the most incredible colors and shapes. Decorate your entryway/garden, or the interior of your living space (how about your dining table, countertops, or even in front of a fireplace). We have Jack Be Littles in white or orange, strange shaped Large Gourds, Field Trip Pumpkins with great long stems, and warty Lunch Ladies to spook your guests. We have fresh fall annuals and herbs to spruce up your window boxes, containers, or planters-some new additions here and there can wake up your tired summer garden to the boldness of fall. Tall corn stalks and bales of hay are in stock too! If you have gone all out-don’t forget about the photo contest-see above.
HEELING IN SALE!
40% off Perennials, Trees and Shrubs-offer valid until Sunday, October 11. Customers have been asking lately if it is an ok time to plant-the answer is YES! Its an especially great time to plant our featured perennials, trees, and shrubs. As the weather cools down in Philadelphia, it is very easy to add these plants to your garden area with no worries all the way into November. And just think-these additions will be ready to greet you in Spring again, erupting and growing stronger by the year. We have so many great perennials available for sun and shade-Wintergreen with red berries great for all seasons of interest, and Blackberry Lily that is doing its fantastic fall show of its seed heads turning into black-colored berries. Hardy Geranium have striking fall color, and Hellebores are in stock-they are evergreen and bloom their beautiful flowers during the cold of winter. Bergenia and Mukdenia have fantastic fall color too! Check out Caryopteris, Red Twig Dogwood, and Aronia for showy Autumn shades. Don’t forget the Lavender, Russian Sage, Coneflower, and more-its a perfect time to stock up for a full garden next season!

What is HEELING IN? Heeling in is something we do here at the Nursery for the trees, shrubs, and perennials to provide them extra protection for the Winter months. A potted perennial, shrub, or tree in open Winter air will get much colder than those in the ground.  Basically, one digs a trench a few inches deep (enough to encase the entire pot and root system) and drops the plant (in its container) into the hole, then cozies the soil up around the plant. The next step is to add mulch, leaves, pine tree boughs, hay or sawdust to provide cover to the top of the soil. Your plant will be naturally watered by the rain and snow, while receiving some well needed protection at the same time. Dormant trees benefit greatly from this process, too. Once Spring arrives, dig up your plants and set them into their more permanent locations.
SALE: 75% OFF ALL TROPICALS!
Come to the greenhouse and see the fantastic selections we have available to make your chillier months feel a bit more like a faraway locale. Lavender blue Thumbergia, purple Passionflower, or sweet smelling white flowered Stephanotis are some vines available. Standard trees such as Lantana, Chinese Hats (pictured) in orange and yellow, and some smaller mixed variety standards are here too! Consider the orange blooming Ixora-that plant is a non stop showy bloomer! False Bird of Paradise, Diffienbachia, Bromeliads, large Cava Cava trees, and more are ripe for your picking. Just find a great spot in a sunny spot away from heat vents, and keep moist-these tropicals will be fantastic additions and green up your home through the winter. Come on over and ask us for advise on keeping your homebound tropicals happy!

Nuts & Berries!
Walnuts sold by the quart are tasty and good for you. Fresh from Lancaster county they pair wonderfully with apples in a tasty fall cake. Storage tip: Keep your walnuts in a cool dry place for maximum shelf life.

This week’s featured apple is seasonal favorite, honey crisp. Excellent, thin flesh followed by a crisp, clean, and zippy finish. They don’t last long and now is certainly the time of the season.

Another fun fruit to note are Kiwi Berries from A. T. Buzby Farm. Grown on a vine like a grape but with the texture and taste of kiwi they are no peel, no fuzz, no fuss!

It’s looking like fall with all of our favorite brassicas popping up. In very limited quantity we have seasons first Brussels sprouts!  Naturally, you’ll want to pair with Philly Cow Share bacon & apples. Looks like broccoli but all fractals? It’s Romanesco. We like to grill it then turn it into a rustic puree to accompany roasted chicken or mushrooms. Beets are back – be sure to roast those too.

Yes, we have more of our Honey from the Hood just in time for fall allergy season. Farmer Katelyn has a few surprises for us so be sure to visit the the Greensgrow Grown table for all of our greens & goodies.

This Week’s Special: Red & Green Bartlett pears in 25 lb cases for $35.  We’re thinking pear butter!

Everyone will get a drop spindle to work with in the class and to take home. We’ll be spinning a “single” on the drop spindle, and plying the yarn. We will see a few techniques for spinning and plying yarn, as well as what goes into prepping raw wool.
