Experiencing the triple show closing last Saturday in Berkeley, I struck up a conversation with a couple between the 5 pm and 8:30 pm shows. As it turned out they had driven from just outside of Olympia, Washington, 13½ hours to see STEREOTYPO for one last time and COPS AND ROBBERS for the first time.

As soon as they finished work on Friday, they hopped in their car and drove first to the Medford Oregon area and stayed in a motel. Saturday morning they drove to Red Bluff where they checked into a second motel first, (where they will later stay the night), then off to The Marsh. They are back to work on Monday morning.

Oh my goodness, this is incredible.

This is not the first time for Crystal and Timothy Bedford. It’s the seventh time they’ve driven to the Bay Area to see Marsh shows since they moved to Washington.
“The first time we went to The Marsh we were living in Visalia,” Tim told me. “We drove up to see Robert Dubac, who Crystal had seen before. Don Reed’s EAST 14th was later that night, and everyone was talking about it in the lobby, so we decided to catch that too. Since then we’ve seen all of Don’s shows, twice!” On one of their trips down, they saw that Brian Copeland’s THE WAITING PERIOD was playing before a Don show, so they decided to get tickets. They loved it too.

Crystal and Tim like to see performances early on and then again as the show develops over its run.

“The shows are eye opening, funny, and emotional,” says Crystal. “Every show I’ve seen provides such a great platform to talk about things. It’s so much more then seeing a play or a movie for entertainment. Marsh shows make you think.”

“Seeing Piper for the first time made me want to see so many more of the shows,” says Tim. “There’s that one playing now, HAVING CANCER IS HILARIOUS (Megan Timpane). We all know someone who had or has cancer. And then there’s Echo Brown and Ann Randolph’s  LOVELAND and INAPPROPRIATE IN ALL THE RIGHT WAYS.”

I think they are thinking about their next trip.

Their biggest dilemma is when they want to see a show in Berkeley and San Francisco on the same night. Well yes, I told them, it’s hard to make it by car with traffic across the Bay Bridge on a Saturday night, but easy by subway. So I’ve offered to take them on their first transbay BART trip.
