2013 Viu Manent Chardonnay Casablanca Valley

$9.99)

95 points
Decanter:

“For its red wines, Viu Manent obtains its fruit from the central area of the Colchuga Valley, where the high tempatures give early maturity and a gentle softness to their wines. For their whites, however, they prefer to buy grapes from closer to the coast, where cold sea breezes enable higher acidity and freshness. This Chardonnay is from Casablanca, 100km north of Colchuuga on the coast of the Central Valley, and marine influence is felt in the wine’s bright acidity, surrounded by ripe white fruit flavors. It’s a voluptuous, round and unctuously ripe Chardonnay that still shows an elegant side. Drink 2015-2019″
(10/2015)
2013 Domaine Sylvain Langoureau St-Aubin 1er Cru “En Remilly”

$29.99)

90 points
Allen Meadows – Burghound:

” *Outstanding* Here too there is a bit of residual sulfur so once again I would suggest aerating this for several minutes first. Otherwise there is fine intensity to the notably ripe, dense and mineral-driven middle weight flavors that are markedly saline in character on the notably dry and refreshing finale that presently displays a touch of austerity.”
(06/2015)
2013 Domaine Sylvain Langoureau St-Aubin 1er Cru “Bas de Vermarain à l’Est”

“Notes of reduction again mask the nose though the mildly funky aromas are followed by rich, full and delicious flavors that manage to retain a good sense of underlying detail and tension on the lingering finish. This is a bit coarser than the Champlots and should drink well slightly earlier.”
K&L Notes:
From the importer: “This husband and wife team is located in the hamlet of Gamay nestled between Puligny Montrachet and St. Aubin. In close proximity to the Grand Crus, Domaine Sylvain Langoureau is made up of numerous small parcels totaling 8.5 hectares. Owners of plots in St. Aubin, Meursault, Puligny and Chassagne, Sylvain and Nathalie’s vines are planted to 75% Chardonnay, 15% Pinot Noir, and 10% Aligote. Everything here is done by hand and with great care. Vines are pruned to a maximum of five shoots for naturally low yields. No treatments are performed in the vineyard past mid-July and the Langoureaus are experimenting with cover grass in certain parcels to promote root competition and to minimize erosion. The winery is essentially a garage and a cellar. Sylvain vinifies his reds in the stainless steel tanks in the garage and ages them in the cellar that is packed with barrels of fermenting and ageing white wines. These wines are elegant gems
and very limited.”2013 Château Saint-Roch “Chimères” Côtes du Roussillon-Villages

$13.99)

93 points
Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate:

“A joint venture between Jean-Marc Lafage and Eric Solomon, the 2013 Cotes du Roussillon Chimeres is just another example of the brilliance of the 2013 vintage in the Roussillon. Coming all from the schist soils of Maury and a blend of 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 10% Carignan that spent 8-12 months in 500-liter barrels and concrete, it possesses a deep purple color to go with savory notes of kirsch and assorted darker berry fruits, pepper, truffle and damp earth. Full-bodied, thrillingly textured and with incredible purity of fruit, this knockout effort stays lively and elegant, with fine tannin, terrific length and no hard edges. It will knock your socks off over the coming 4-6 years. (JD)”
(10/2014)
According to the Wine Advocate: “These are brilliant new releases from Chateau Saint Roch, which was recently purchased by Jean-Marc Lafage (and is a joint venture with importer Eric Solomon). Located in the Cabirou region of Maury, in the Roussillon, which was famous for making fortified wines in the past, it consists of mostly schist and granite soils, and has a slew of old-vine Carignan and Grenache. The wines are jaw-dropping good. In addition, they’re ridiculously under-priced given their quality. (JD)”2012 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape (1.5L) (Pre-Arrival)

$139.99)

96 points

“What I think might end up being the best Beaucastel since the 1990 or 2001, the 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape offers a full-bodied, decadent style to go with awesome black and blue fruits, garrigue, licorice, crushed flowers and violets. The purity here is truly something, and it has fabulous mid-palate concentration, building tannin and massive texture. Given all of the fruit and texture here, it will no doubt drink well in its youth, but it should still be alive and kicking after two decades as well. (JD)

Wine Spectator:

“The raspberry and boysenberry confiture aromas and flavors are dominant, but there’s plenty of dried star anise, bay and licorice root to fill out the chorus. Best from 2018 through 2030.”
(09/2015)

Antonio Galloni:

“Opaque ruby. Potent, mineral-laced raspberry and cherry aromas are complicated by suave floral and spice qualities, picking up white pepper and cola accents with air. Seamless, round and sweet on the palate, offering intense red berry preserve and floral pastille flavors with a touch of allspice. Finishes sappy and precise, with velvety tannins and a late jolt of cherry compote. (JR)”
(04/2015)
2010 Sella e Mosca Terre Rare Carignane Sardinia

$11.99)
From the producer: “Made from bush-trained Carignano grapes grown in the coastal area between Capo Teulada and the Iglesiente mountains. The nose offers residual vinous sensations, accompanied by great fruit that emerges from a slight underlying note of good oak. The warm, full palate combines velvety, caressing tannins with ripe late-autumn fruit, held together by the subtle presence of fine oak. It goes well with red and white meats, game and fermented cheeses.”2012 Bodegas Teso La Monja “Almirez” Toro

$19.99)

“The 2012 Almirez (a 1,000-case cuvée of 100% Tinta de Toro) was aged 14 months in French oak. This sensational wine comes from vines planted between 1949 and 1999. Yields were a conservative 1.8 tons of fruit per acre. An inky/purple color is followed by aromas of camphor, ground pepper, blackberries and cassis. This full-bodied, Northern Rhône Valley-like Spanish red exhibits meaty/lard notes, terrific density and purity, and a finish that lasts nearly 40 seconds. It should drink nicely for a decade or more.

This large estate in Toro is owned by the Eguren family, who also owns the Dominio de Eguren winery. These two value-priced cuvées, primarily fashioned from old vines planted between 1880 and 1999, are from head-pruned vines. They represent impressive quality. (RP)”
(11/2014)

92 points
Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar:

“(malo in small oak barrels followed by aging in French oak, one-third of it new, for 12 months): Opaque purple. Smoky blueberry and cherry compote aromas pick up a peppery nuance with air, along with a subtle mocha quality. Fleshy and seamless on the palate, offering sweet, concentrated black and blue fruit flavors and a touch of lavender pastille. Spreads out nicely on the juicy, penetrating finish, which is framed by silky, slow-building tannins. (JR)”
(09/2014)

91 points
Wine Enthusiast:

“Brawny aromas of asphalt, roofing tar and rubber are balanced by smooth, deep blackberry and cassis scents. This is tannic and rugged, but the palate also offers buttery, oaky richness and depth. Heavily toasted plum and blackberry flavors finish with heat and a taste of dark chocolate. Drink through 2019. ”

“A polished texture conceals the solid structure in this muscular red, which offers currant and blackberry flavors that show notes of espresso and tar. Gamy and savory accents lend this an austere character, but fresh acidity maintains liveliness. Best from 2016 through 2024.”
(03/2015)
2012 Dunn Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

$89.99)

93-96 points

“A barrel sample of the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain (from a vineyard planted in 1972) is splendid. A dense purple color is followed by notes of graphite, blackberries, crème de cassis, ink and spring flowers. The wine possesses fabulous focus, richness, purity and density. It should drink well for 25-30 years, typical for Dunn wines.”
2014 Kalinda Russian River Valley Chardonnay

$12.99)
We can tell you this much: our Kalinda private label hooks you up with awesome wine at a fraction of what you’d otherwise pay for this exact same wine under its normal label. While we have to remain quiet about the source of this beauty, we can tell you that it sells elsewhere under the winery label at a much higher premium. Get it while it lasts.2013 Pine Ridge Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

$49.99)

90-92 points

“The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley shows plenty of freshly crushed blackberry and cassis fruit, real good acidity and terrific fruit purity – all characteristics of this magic vintage. This should drink well for 10-15 years or more.”
2013 Spellbound California Petite Sirah

“The real star, and a sleeper selection for sure, is the outstanding 2013 Petite Sirah. This wine has an inky, ruby/purple color, notes of cassis, blueberry, blackberry fruit, incense and camphor. This is a medium to full-bodied beauty to drink over the next 5-6 years, possibly longer. These are excellent wines once again as this winery has appeared frequently in these Best Buy pages. (RP)”
