Mikaela Davis
(Buy Tickets)

Mikaela Davis is a harpist/singer-songwriter from Rochester, New York who burst onto the scene following her amazing YouTube covers of Sufjan Stevens’ “Casimir Pulaski Day,” which has received over 150,000 hits, and Elliott Smith’s “Twilight,” which has received close to 120,000 hits. Since releasing her latest EP Fortune Teller in January of this year, Mikaela has showcased at SXSW and toured the East Coast and Midwest with bandmates Alex Coté (drums and percussion) and Cian McCarthy (guitar, sitar, and keys). Refinery 29 describes Mikaela’s style as “virtuosic playing with singer-songwriter chops.” Her musical inspirations range from psychedelic rock to classical and jazz and, to date, she has had the pleasure of sharing the stage with Indie Rock artists My Brightest Diamond, Jukebox the Ghost, Filligar, and Indians.

Willie Watson

Looking like a man from leaner and meaner times, Willie Watson steps on stage with a quiet gravitas. But, when he opens his mouth and lets out that high lonesome vocal, you can hear him loud and clear. David Rawlings, longtime friend and producer of Watson’s previous band, Old Crow Medicine Show says of Willie: “There’s a lot of weight in the way Willie performs, he’s had some tragedy in his life, which has informed his art. There’s an emotional edge to what he does because of who he is as a human being. Willie is the only one of his generation who can make me forget these songs were ever sung before.”

Striking Matches
w/ Fairground Saints

With their T Bone Burnett-produced debut album, guitar-wielding duo Striking Matches creates an unexpected and unique sound that defies easy categorization. The music of Striking Matches-Sarah Zimmermann and Justin Davis-occupies that sweet spot at the intersection of country, rock and blues, where all of the elements blend to form an authentically raw and rootsy sound that has a timeless and international appeal.
Striking Matches is the debut artist on the newly revived label, I.R.S. Nashville, and has toured with Train, Vince Gill, Ashley Monroe and Hunter Hayes.
WebsiteVideoFAIRGROUND SAINTS
Los Angeles-based trio Fairground Saints create their warm and wistful sound by playing off the delicate contradictions at the heart of their music. With each member sharing songwriting duties, Mason Van Valin and Elijah Edwards impart a starkly literate, sometimes-gritty sense of introspection informed by artists like Bob Dylan and Jim Messina, while their fellow vocalist Megan McAllister lends a soulful vulnerability and gutsy intimacy inspired by everyone from Linda Ronstadt to Rihanna. “We each bring in our own different elements, but what connects us is the level of honesty that we go for in our songs,” says McAllister. And in achieving that honesty, Fairground Saints infuse their music with intense emotional power. “All of us in the band believe in being as real as possible with our music, and not shying away from wherever a song is trying to take us,” Van Valin says.
Fairground Saints’ self-titled debut album is shot through with elegant melodies and lush three-part harmonies. Showing both an artful sophistication and a guileless passion born from what Van Valin describes as “almost a biological imperative to make music,” the album also captures Fairground Saints’ easy chemistry and a shared sensibility that feels beamed in from the golden era of singer-songwriters.

Kristin Andreassen

No Cover

While she’s best known for her smart and emotive original lyrics, Kristin got her start in traditional string band music – she played guitar and fiddle with the groundbreaking string band Uncle Earl and toured as a dancer with the Appalachian clogging ensemble Footworks. Along the way, Kristin has worked closely with such diverse talents as John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin), Dirk Powell (Joan Baez, Cold Mountain), her Uncle Earl bandmate Abigail Washburn and local New York pals Lucius, Aoife O’Donovan, Dawn Landes, Son Lux, and Jeffrey Lewis. 2015 saw the release of Kristin’s second solo album Gondolier, while her debut album Kiss Me Hello attained ‘folk classic’ status for the song “Crayola Doesn’t Make a Color For Your Eyes” (which has been covered by artists ranging from Tyne Daly to high school marching bands). Kristin plays at Rockwood on September 29th with Stephanie Coleman on fiddle and banjo.

Mahogany Music Club Presents:
Leo Stannard

The tiny British village of Ragdale provided the solitude for a young Leo Stannard to hone his craft and become the artist that he is today. Having been taught classical guitar since the age of 9, he’s developed his own unique percussive style, taking hues from the likes of John Martyn, John Butler Trio, and Ben Howard. Now signed to Black Butter Records / Sony Music, Leo is fast becoming one of the most exciting new acts of 2015.

Secret Someones

While on the road as solo artists in an early-2013 house-concert tour, Brooklyn-based singer/songwriters Bess Rogers, Hannah Winkler, and Lelia Broussard ended up joining in on each other’s sets and finding that their combined voices made for some gorgeous harmonies. Upon returning to New York, the trio began writing songs together and-along with their shared touring drummer Zach Jones-quickly formed a band they named Secret Someones. Building off the soulful harmonies that first sparked their collaboration, Secret Someones’ self-titled full-length debut blends that sweetly graceful vocal work with a raw, riff-heavy sound that’s moody but melodic, impassioned but intensely catchy.
Secret Someones arrives as the follow-up to I Won’t Follow, a 2014 EP that the band supported in part by touring with Ingrid Michaelson and Jukebox the Ghost. Secret Someones draws much inspiration from classic alt-rock acts like Nirvana and Weezer, both sonically and in its emotional urgency. “Most of these songs are addressing things like independence and learning how to lose that fear of being who you really are, so it felt right to us to go for a sound that was unapologetic and very much in-your-face.”

Ticket purchase for 10/1 includes a copy of the new album, available for pick up on the night of the show.
