Author J. Michael Welton will launch the General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen’s 2015/2016 Lecture Series. He will be discussing his new book, Drawing from Practice, which explores and illuminates the ways that 26 diverse renowned architects use freehand drawing to shape the world. Mr. Welton will give a short presentation on his book, to be followed by a Q&A and book signing.

Using drawings and architecture from every architectural generation practicing today, Michael Welton traces the tactile sketch, from conception to finished product, through words, images, and photographs that reveal the creative process in action. Architects featured include Deborah Berke, Daniel Libeskind, Richard Meier, Bill Pedersen, Suchi Reddy, Tod Williams and Billie Tsien.
In an age of cutting edge technology, Mr. Welton’s book and presentation will be a refreshing reminder that drawing by hand remains an enduring art form integral to the design process.J. Michael Welton writes about architecture, art, and design for national and regional publications, and edits a digital design magazine at www.architectsandartisans.com. His news articles, feature stories, and op-ed criticisms have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Huffington Post, Dwell, Architectural Record, Metropolis, Interior Design, New York, Inform, and Ocean Home magazines.
