Instead of being cooked in sizzling hot, greasy oil, oven-fried foods are coated in ingredients like breadcrumbs, crushed nuts, or potato chips and baked until crisp. By making your favorite dishes in the oven instead of frying them, you’ll save yourself about half the amount of fat and calories. Oven frying may take more time than traditional deep-frying, but it’s worth it. Plus, baking requires little, or sometimes no oil.

When you dip food into hot oil, the high temperatures cause the starch in the food to create advanced glycation end products, which play a role in the development of health issues like diabetes and atherosclerosis. Hot oil is also associated with oxidation, which can cause damage to the kidneys, heart, and lungs.

Furthermore, frying takes away any health benefits a food may have. Fish, for instance, is a nutritious food option, but when it’s covered in deep-fried oil—uh-uh. Not so healthy.

Frying foods in your oven is also a cleaner alternative. There is no smoke and little to no spatter to clean.

How to oven-fry your food

Learning to fry foods in a conventional oven is simple. First, you’ll need a coating for the food—what that coating is will depend on what you’re cooking and the flavor you want.

For instance, shrimp could be dipped in bread crumbs, coconut flakes, and milk to create a perfect seaside flavor. Prefer chicken? Mix together crushed cereal flakes with some chopped parsley and parmesan cheese. Or, add a little spice to your oven-fried chicken by coating the thighs and legs in bread crumbs, egg, red pepper flakes, and dijon mustard. Don’t be afraid to get creative!

Secondly, you will need a baking sheet, preferably a perforated baking sheet, which allows the air to circulate around the food and helps to crisp the coating. Or you can opt for a healthy deep fryer.

Oven fried “batter” tips

Using breading trays or shallow bowls helps to make sure that the surface of the food gets coated.

Start by dredging your food in seasoned flour. Putting flour over the foods ensures they will become evenly coated with the other ingredients. Be sure to shake the excess flour off into a bowl.

Dip the items into an egg mixture or other batter you’ve concocted.

Gently press the food into your seasoned breading mixture. The egg will help the breading stick.

Bake in an oven that’s at least 400° F. The higher your oven temperature, the crispier the coating of your food will be.

You may have to flip your food during the oven cook time to ensure everything bakes evenly.

You can use oil to fry foods like potatoes and chicken if you prefer. Of course, you’re not using nearly as much oil as you would if you were opting for the traditional deep-frying method. You only need about two tablespoons of canola oil to coat fries or wedges. Pour the oil in a thin layer in your baking pan, and add the potatoes. More Healthy Fried Options

As a health-conscious lover of fried foods, I often face a decision on whether to indulge in a plate of salty fries or opt for a side salad. If that sounds familiar to you, then the Philips Digital Air Fryer may become your new best friend. Visit CHEFS Mix Blog for our product review.
