EARLY DAYS OF HIP HOP

Join us today Saturday, Aug 29th at 3pm for a discussion with

photographer and filmmaker
Lisa Leone about the early days of Hip-Hop.

From Nas in the first studio recordings for what would become Illmatic to Snoop on the set of his first video, from ingénue Debi Mazar hanging on the stoops of the West Village to Grandmaster Flash at a RockSteady reunion, Leone’s photographs open portals to the sounds, places and, most important, the people who forged and continue to influence the energy that is hip hop.  Recently published in the book ‘Here I Am’,  Leone had a front row seat for the birth of modern day Hip-Hop and with her camera captured the early career of some of the biggest names of the genre.  Admission to the conversation is free but tickets are required for the 3:45 screening of ‘Straight Outta Compton’

“An electrifying piece of hip-hop history that
speaks urgently to right now.” – Rolling Stone

“One of the summer’s most entertaining and
provocative movies.” – New York Post

“This is one of the better musical biopics
of the last 20 years.”- Chicago Sun Times

In 1987, five young men, using brutally honest rhymes and hardcore beats, put their frustration and anger about life in the most dangerous place in America into the most powerful weapon they had: their music.

Taking us back to where it all began, STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON tells the true story of NWA, a groundbreaking new group that revolutionizes music and pop culture, changing and influencing hip-hop forever.  There first studio album, “Straight Outta Compton,” stirs controversy with its brutally honest depiction of life in Southern Los Angeles.  These cultural rebels-armed only with their lyrics, swagger, bravado and raw talent-stood up to the authorities that meant to keep them down and as they spoke the truth in a way that no one had before, exposing life in their hood, their voice ignited a social revolution that is still reverberating today.

F. Gary Gray directs this biopic about the rise to stardom for the act that earned the moniker of “The World’s Most Dangerous Group”, featuring Ice Cube’s son O’Shea Jackson Jr. playing the role of his father, Corey Hawkins as Dr. Dre, and Jason Mitchell as the late Eazy-E.

Straight Outta Compton is more than just a rags-to-riches story or a musical biopic.  It offers a look at the birth of a genre and a movement that would redefine American music and culture forever.

PHOENIX

A spellbinding mystery of identity, illusion, and deception unfolds against the turmoil of post-World War II Germany in the stunning new film from acclaimed director Christian Petzold (
Barbara, Jerichow).

Nelly (Nina Hoss), a German-Jewish nightclub singer, has survived a concentration camp, but with her face disfigured by a bullet wound. After undergoing reconstructive surgery, Nelly emerges with a new face, one similar but different enough that her former husband, Johnny (Ronald Zehrfeld), doesn’t recognize her. Rather than reveal herself, Nelly walks into a dangerous game of duplicity and disguise as she tries to figure out if the man she loves may have been the one who betrayed her to the Nazis. Evoking the shadows and haunted mood of post-war Berlin, PHOENIX weaves a complex tale of a nation’s tragedy and a woman’s search for answers as it builds towards an unforgettable, heart-stopping climax.

“An incredibly intense drama that makes you hold your breath, and it builds toward a total knockout of a final scene in which the story is resolved with hardly a word”

THE THIRD MAN
Held over for a second week by popular demand!

In this film noir Cold War spy classic, Holly Martins (Joseph Cotten), a third-rate American pulp novelist, arrives in postwar Vienna, where he has been promised a job by his old friend Harry Lime (Orson Welles). Upon his arrival, Martins discovers that Lime has been killed in a traffic accident, and that his funeral is taking place immediately. At the graveside, Martins meets outwardly affable Major Calloway (Trevor Howard) and actress Anna Schmidt (Alida Valli), who is weeping copiously. When Calloway tells Martins that the late Harry Lime was a thief and murderer, the loyal Martins is at first outraged. Gradually, he discovers not only that Calloway was right but also that the man lying in the coffin in the film’s early scenes was not Harry Lime at all-and that Lime is still very much alive (he was the mysterious “third man” at the scene of the fatal accident). Thus the stage is set for the movie’s famous climactic confrontation in the sewers of Vienna-and the even more famous final shot, in which Martins pays emotionally for doing “the right thing.”
A triumph of atmosphere – with its Vienna locations (including the gigantic Riesenrad ferris wheel and the dripping sewers), its tilted camera angels, its Robert Krasker-shot shadows, and Anton Karas’s unforgettable zither theme – and with its stars in perhaps their most iconic roles: bereted Trevor Howard at his most Britishly military; Alida Valli, here truly enigmatic and Garboesque; and Welles’ Harry Lime, arriving in one of the greatest star entrances ever, and adding the famous “cuckoo clock” speech to Greene’s original script, with the whole topped by its legendary, almost endlessly drawn-out finale shot. Three Oscar nominations for director Reed, editor Oswald Hafenrichter, and cinematographer Krasker, with a win for the latter; the Grand Prize at Cannes; and the only film on both the AFI and BFI Top 100 lists of, respectively, the greatest American and British films (#1 for the Brits), as well as being named The Greatest Foreign Film of All Time… by the Japanese!   The Third Man is a cinematic treasure that is required viewing for any true film lover.   The results of the restoration are extraordinary that its recent re-release played for over a month in New York and Los Angeles earlier this summer.  Now Miami audiences can see the film in its stunning film noir glory in it’s exclusive South Florida engagement at O Cinema Miami Beach.

AMY

AMY tells the incredible story of six-time Grammy-winner Amy Winehouse – in her own words.  Featuring extensive unseen archive footage and previously unheard tracks, this strikingly modern, moving and vital film shines a light on the world we live in, in a way that very few can.

A once-in-a-generation talent, Amy Winehouse was a musician that captured the world’s attention. A pure jazz artist in the most authentic sense – Amy poured her heart and soul into her music expressing personal struggles and pain through her intimate lyrics. The combo of her raw honesty and supreme talent resulted in some of the most uniquely adored songs of our time.
Amy became an international sensation, experiencing a meteoric rise to fame she had never sought nor expected.  Her huge success, however, resulted in relentless and invasive media attention which coupled with Amy’s troubled relationships and addictions, led her into a tragic cycle of self-destruction, resulting in her untimely death at age 27.  Four years later, Asif Kapadia’s powerful documentary invited audiences to remember and celebrate Amy as a brilliant artist while asking ourselves how it was the we watched her disappear in front of our eyes.

THE LEGENDARY PLACIDO DOMINGO DAZZLES!

Unbeknownst to the public, Marlon Brando – a great star who remained deliberately mysterious to the press and the world at large for his entire professional life – created a vast archive of personal audio and visual materials over the course of his lifetime, often deeply confessional and completely without vanity or evasion. Now – for the first time ever – those recordings come to life in Riley’s film.  An official selection of the Sundance Film Festival and heralded by the Village Voice as “a masterpiece’, Listen to Me Marlon is a must see for any fan of the actors work and the incredible legacy he left behind.

Charting his exceptional career as an actor and his extraordinary life away from the stage and screen, the film reveals the complexities and contradictions that were Marlon Brando by telling the story in his own words – and only his own words, revealing a man more humane and compelling than anyone ever could have imagined.
