Stay Tuned for FamilyFarmed’s Direct Market Success Campaign!

We know you love local food. So we will be asking you soon to help us grow young farmers, by making tax-deductible donations to our crowd-funding campaign backing our new and exciting Direct Market Success program. We will be officially launching the campaign on the IndieGoGo fundraising site in late September. Here’s why. Did you know theaverage age of farmers in the United States is nearly 60? That means we need to act urgently to cultivate a new generation of trained youngfarmers to grow the food you love.

Wholesale Success Back In Stock

And speaking of our popular Wholesale Success program… The brand-new 4th edition of the manual, Wholesale Success: A Farmer’s Guide to Food Safety, Selling, Postharvest Handling, and Packing Produce, is in stock and available for purchase.
Wholesale Success builds the capacity of farmers to meet the burgeoning demand for locally/regionally grown fruits and vegetables. Adopting best practices in food safety, postharvest handling, packing, and business management will help farmers be more efficient and profitable.

For the past five years, using this manual, FamilyFarmed, our experienced farmer-trainer Atina Diffley, and on-the-ground partner organizations have trained thousands of growers to better meet wholesale buyers’ expectations for product quality, consistency, and food safety. To date, the Wholesale Success program has reached more than 7,000 farmers from across the U.S. Read more here if you are interested in bringing manuals and this training workshop to your network of produce farmers. To order your Wholesale Success manual visit our website.

Farm Aid is Coming to Chicago in September!

Our hometown of Chicago, on Saturday, Sept. 19, will host the annual, star-driven Farm Aid concert – one of the best and certainly most entertaining ways to help keep family farmers on their land and train the next generation of producers.
This major fundraising event, which will take place at FirstMerit Bank Pavilion on Northerly Island, marks the 30th anniversary of the first Farm Aid concert held downstate in Champaign. Music legends Willie Nelson, Neil Young, and John Mellencamp, who founded the organization in response to the farm economic crisis of the mid-1980s, will perform along with fellow Farm Aid board member Dave Matthews and a great lineup of musical artists. For more information about the concert, or to purchase tickets, visit the Farm Aid website.
And that’s not all. The concert day will start with the HOMEGROWN Village, where attendees can meet farmers, engage in hands-on food and farm activities, and learn about the ways family farmers are enriching our soil, protecting our water and growing our economy, in addition to bringing us good food for good health. And the event will be preceded by a two-day symposium (Sept. 17-18) titled Farm Aid 30: Strength From Our Roots, and an Urban Farm bus tour from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sept. 18.
Family Farmed will be directly engaged with Farm Aid through the bus tour and the HOMEGROWN Village. Look for our previews and coverage of the event on Good Food on Every Table.

New Sugar Beet Store Sweetens Chicago’s Food Co-op Scene

Chicago has been something of a laboratory for the rise of the Good Food movement. Yet there has been one element of the Good Food scene that has been largely missing in Chicago: food cooperatives, which invite members of the public to buy ownership shares and have a say in how the stores are run and what products they stock.Until now, that is. Sugar Beet Food Co-op, located just west of the city in suburban Oak Park, held its Grand Opening on Aug. 14. And the store, in planning for more than three years, is the forerunner in an unprecedented wave of food co-op activity in the Chicagoland area.
Rick Bayless: Overturned GMO Ban is a Sad Day for Mexico

All corn is not the same. Mexico produces a wide variety of colors and flavors that chef Rick Bayless thinks will be at risk from the adoption of GMO corn there. Photo: Frontera via Shutterstock

Rick Bayless’ mastery of regional Mexican cuisine at Chicago’s Frontera Grill,Topolobampo, and Xoco has made him one of the nation’s most celebrated and best-known chefs. He also is a Good Food advocate who is greatly concerned with the welfare of family farmers and the integrity of the food we eat. He thus was distressed by a court ruling that overturned Mexico’s two-year-old ban on genetically modified (GMO) corn, and expressed his concerns in this column first published on his website on Aug. 22.
