Greensgrow Summer CSA • Your Dollars Support Local Farms: Meet Ed Yin from Queens Farm
Queens Farm is an organic Asian vegetable farm that is family owned and operated in West Chester Pennsylvania. Ed, who’s the nicest guy ever, grows 250 different varieties of produce annually, from heirloom tomatoes to yardlong beans to daikon to edamames. Winter CSA members were just treated to his gorgeous spring onions, and summer members will recall his tatsoi, a Greensgrow favorite! Last week on a farm visit we met Ed’s buddy Jasper the cat and got a looksee at what’s coming up this season. Ed’s farm is on a sunny hillside in Chester County. On the day of our visit it was full of honey bees even though he doesn’t keep hives, a sure sign of a healthy productive organic farm. They are attracted by the diverse selection of herb, fruit, veggie and wild flowers all around the his property. We are proud we are able to help support Ed and his family, and Jasper too!

We are Hiring!
We are looking for a Mobile Market Manager, get all the details on the website.
Tomatoes are here!
The nursery is packed with tomatoes and all kinds of goodies! We know you want to get your hands on your favorite tomato varieties before they’re gone- just a caution: Please don’t plant them outside till the night temperatures are out of the 40s. Warm weather plants like tomatoes and peppers can get stunted. They can stay out in the day and come in for the night. Once you get to planting, make sure to fertilize the hole and then again when they start to set fruit. Add broken up egg shells to the planting whole, the calcium will help fight blossom end rot. More varieties are coming too!

Mary’s Pick’s Tomatoes:
Each year Mary chooses a few special favorite varieties, old & new, for us to grow as starts for you. They are making their appearance in the nursery this week. Katelyn has grown these beauties from seed here on the farm, available in 4″ pots. Organically grown.
Sungold: The little orange, super sweet cherry tomato that everyone has come to love.
Green Giant: Large, green heirloom variety.
Lemon Boy: Medium sized yellow hybrid.
Red Bounty: Medium sized red hybrid.
Black Velvet: Medium sized red and black heirloom.
Chocolate Cherry: Red and dark brown cherry tomato
Sweet Treats: Sweet red cherry tomato
Margherita: Classic Italian paste tomato

Fruit trees have arrived; apples, cherries, figs, peaches, pears and more.
Before you bring one home, read a little bit about how much time and care they can take. Sour cherries are really low maintenance and you only need one!  Most trees do best in pairs (do you have room?) and may need to be sprayed to control different diseases and insect pests. The library is a great resource for gardeners! Read about these little guys too before diving in. . .
Chicks!
We have a few breeds of chicks for sale; Columbian, Silver Laced and White Wyandottes, Dark and Light Brahmas. They are $7. If you were not at the workshop a couple of weeks ago, we advise careful consideration before starting your own back yard flock. Chickens make a great addition to your homestead, but need specific care, feeding and maintenance to be happy & healthy.
Asparagus!
Need we say more? We will be having small farmstands this weekend, Sat & Sun • 10am–3pm in honor of these delicious green fronds, first pick of the season coming from Delaware. Make sure to wash the Delaware sand off these guys! We are in between CSA seasons now, so we’ll be offering a small but lovely selection of the Spring’s best until we get going 2 days a week starting on May 21.

Here’s what we’ve got for you this weekend:
Cameo Apples, Three Springs Farm, Aspers PA – IPM
Asparagus Fifer Orchards, Camden-Wyoming, DE
Wild Rhubarb a.k.a Japanese Knotweed
Yukon Gold Potato, Sunrise Ridge Organics, Lancaster, PA – OG
Japanese Red Sweet Potatoes, Parzanese Brothers, Hammonton, NJ
Spring Onion, Queens Farm, West Chester, PA
Red Onion Tuscarora Organics, Lancaster, PA – OG
White Onion Tuscarora Organics, Lancaster, PA – OG
Red ‘Lutz’ Beets Landisdale Farm, Lancaster, PA – OG
Portobello Mushrooms, Phillips, Kennett Square PA

Japanese knot weed/ wild rhubarb!
This is a beautiful edible shoot in spring. It’s loved in it’s native Southeast Asia, and despised as an invasive here and in Europe where it wreaks havoc. The shoots look a little like asparagus, and the flavor is a bit like rhubarb or lemony greens. Prepare by peeling any woody or tough skins and steaming. It can be used like rhubarb in jams and desserts. It’s full of vitamin A &C.
