Spring Has Sprung!
We’re all spotting the first flowers popping up through the leaves this week, it’s so great to see some color again! It’s no wonder the egg is one of the symbols of spring – our chickens are laying an amazing amount of eggs these days. In the seeding room things have begun to grow exponentially. We’re right around the time of the last frost date for our region which means gardening seasons really get going now! Don’t miss the Kale & Horseradish Matzo Ball Soup on the blog this week, it is gorgeous!
Backyard Chickens Workshop Next Weekend
We are offering a Backyard Chicken Workshop with aviary expert Marianne Morrison on April 11 for those of you interested in starting your own flock. Register here. If you are interested in buying chicks for your backyard flock, we’re offering 5 breeds this year chosen by Marianne for their suitability to our climate, temperament and quality. Chicks will be in by April 11th.
Support local farms all season and get 6 month of great local food!
This year we have pick ups at Greengrow Farms (Kensington), Greensgrow West (West Philly), Fireside Camp Supply (Graduate Hospital), Williams Sonoma (Center City), PA Hospital (Center City), The Navy Yard (South Philadelphia), Campbell Soup Company (Camden). The CSA begins the week of May 21. Day and time depends on the share type and location you choose. Details are on the application. See the schedule here.

Herbs, cold crop starts and spring bloomers are in!
Yes, we have lovely potted bulbs in bloom to take to Easter. They are also kosher for passover! We’ll be open Thursday, Friday and Saturday 10-5 and Easter Sunday 10-4. Cheerful spring flowers like primrose, pansies, ranunculus are here. Find flowering quince, lilacs, willows and more in the nursery this weekend too. Pretty pulmonaria is one of the perennials we got this week. Also classic, red poppies-in-bud, hellebores, candytuft, creeping phlox and other spring favorites. Soil are in including amendments like mushroom compost!

Herbs are here; cilantro, mint, parsley, sage, oregano and more. A few cold hardy veggie starts are in including kale, spinach, lettuce, collards, chard, celery, and cabbage. We have Greensgrow Grown lettuces starts and they’re ready to fill in your garden.  Looks like we are going to have some nice days for planting this week!

Pots in all shapes in sizes are in-stock now in the nursery. We have a huge variety of cost-effective terra cotta pots (and saucers) to choose from.  Invest in a beautiful pot where you’ll see it often.  As long as they always have good drainage, they’ll last for many, many years. Maybe some of your pots didn’t make it through the winter? Now is a great time to replace them. And to ensure they last a long time, prop them up on pot “feet” or bricks and only use soil-less potting mix (perhaps with a little compost mixed in) to keep them draining well all-year long.

If you have plants, you should have fertilizer, too.  We have a few new products in the fertilizer shed and one is useful for reducing transplant shock. Good timing for putting in your pansies, veggie starts and forsythia.  New, organic Bio-Tone is a microbe enhanced all natural plant food (like yogurt for your plants!).  It includes both Endo & Ecto Mycorrhizae, grows larger root mass to help plants establish fast, promotes bigger blooms & reduces transplant loss. The fish emulsion is IN STOCK in all it’s formulations.  A great, mild fertilizer that eases transplant shock we swear by this one on the farm.  Find it in the Garden Shop, just beyond the land of pots.

Nothing says Spring like fresh green garlic from Landisdale Farm. Green garlic looks like spring onions with a bulb at the bottom & packs a subtle garlicky punch. It can be used in salad dressings, sauteed in oil with spinach, or used in mashed potatoes.

We’ve got beautiful blue sweet potatoes, perfect for roasting and among the last of the season.

Farmer Katelyn has plenty of kale & spinach to keep things fresh in your vegetable crisper!

Suzy Q’s baking a blueberry lemon zest hand pie and a savory pie to keep spirits up as you buy all of your favorite veggie starts from our nursery. Mary’s green cream cheese and Pimento cheese are back.

We’re running a special on Tait Farm cranberry mustard: buy 1 jar and get 2 Center City soft pretzels for free.

Check out the full list of what’s available at the farmstand here.
