Spring Starts on Friday!
With the first day of Spring comes opening day at Greensgrow West! We had a great first year in West Philadelphia and are looking forward to year two. We love our spot on Baltimore Ave and are looking to expand in years to come with an additional spot in the neighborhood where we can supplement our selection & programming for the community. Mary (Greensgrow’s Founder) reflects in her blog post this week about a visit to a potential second site. Go “Inside the Mind of Mary” on the blog.

What says Spring more than baby chicks! We are offering a Backyard Chicken Workshop with aviary expert Marianne Morrison  on April 11 for those of you interested in starting your own flock. Register here. If you are interested in buying chicks for your backyard flock, we’re offering 5 breeds this year chosen by Marianne for their suitability to our climate, temperment and quality; Dark and Light Brahmas, White, Silver Laced & Columbian Wyandottes. You can order on the website here. Orders must be place by March 27. We’ve booked some other great workshops for April, May & June! Check out the calendar at greensgrow.org/events. Next weekend, March 28 don’t forget Philly Fixers will be here, plus an ecycling event is happening at the corner of Cumberland & Gaul!

We have the last of the Seed Starting Workshops of the season on Saturday if you have missed out on the others. There are still spots left, register here. Also on Saturday, Don’t forget to stop by and say hi to our friend, neighbor, fellow farmer, now author. . .
Nic Esposito • Kensington Homestead • Book Signing

Saturday • March 21 • 11am-2pm
Nic Esposito will be at the farm to sign books, meet & greet the Greensgrow community. Nic is the founder of The Head and the Hand Press as well as the Emerald Street farm. He is looking forward to meeting all of you!

Mary wrote one of the blurbs for the book cover;
 “In Kensington Homestead Nic Esposito recounts the daily grind, calamity, futility, and insanity of his life as an urban farmer/homesteader. Whether he’s tracking imaginary voodoo chicken thieves, finding himself in the middle of a real Halloween shootout, or finding inner peace as he harvests his first jars of honey, Esposito delivers in poignant prose and a journalist’s detail his stories of seeking an antidote to the blandness of modern urban life. If you think you know city life, think again.”

The farmstand goes back outside this Saturday as Spring gets started! The recent bout of warm weather is giving way to beautiful Greensgrow lettuce, arugula, and spinach from the high tunnels. As root veggie season winds down we are savoring our last opportunity to bring you celeriac, parsnips, & acorn squash. Saturday’s weather might be perfect for an early spring BBQ. Fire up your grill, halve an acorn squash, & wrap in foil with butter and garlic.

New: We’re excited to bring on Landisdale Farm’s nitrate free grass fed beef sticks. These delicious treats aren’t your truck stop beef sticks, containing 5 simple ingredients.

Suzy Q has prepared peach hand pies, pimento cheese dip, and basil pesto. Vendors on Saturday are Mucho Bueno Tacos, Mycopolitan Mushroom Co, & Parable Flavors.
This year’s selection of pots are stunning!  We’re unpacking them as fast as we can. Organic Mechanic potting soil is in others are on the way!

We have the loveliest potato start varieties for you this spring. They are really easy & fun to grow, too! If you’ve never grown them before you start by planting them in a bit of a hole, or trough. As the plant grows you cover them up to level ground and then when they grow some more you hill-up the soil around them. In the fall, you dig in and harvest a huge nest of potatoes. It’s awesome! I’ve grown mine in partial shade and had good results. We also have a selection of asparagus, rhubarb, garlic, and onion root starts.

Now is the time to get your seeds started! If you are starting seed indoors, get the started this weekend. St. Patrick’s Day is the traditional time to plant your peas outdoors. Get growing folks!

Happy Spring!
