2nd Annual Winemaker Dinner with Michael Keenan!

Michael Keenan of Robert Keenan Winery
for a 5 course wine & food pairing extravaganza
for only $59 + tax & gratuity!
MONDAY, MARCH 14, 2011

High in the Mayacamas Range, at an elevation of 1700 feet above the Napa Valley
floor, are Spring Mountain and the Robert Keenan Winery and Vineyards.
This area was first identified as prime vineyard land by Peter Conradi in the late
19th century when he planted 100 acres of terraced vineyard in Zinfandel and Syrah
grapes. The Conradi Winery operated until prohibition when the vineyards and winery
fell out of use.
In 1974, Robert Keenan purchased 180 acres of forest on the defunct Conradi Winery
site. No vines remained. Only the crumbling walls of the former winery and a few
old broken tanks told of its history, but Robert was certain the mountain top vineyards
would be perfect for an estate winery. He replaced tree stumps and rocks with rows
of Cabernet and Chardonnay, hired and engineer to redesign the original winery structure,
and brought in a contractor to begin construction. The winery was made operational
just in time for the harvest of 1977. From that time on, Keenan has earned a great
reputation for producing wines of intense character and renowned acclaim.
It produces nearly 14,000 cases per year. Combining the dedication of experienced
winemakers with a commitment to excellence, the Robert Keenan Winery has distinguished
last 7 vintages, 38 wines have been rated between 90-97 points by Robert Parker,
Jr.

Our 2nd Annual Visit from

Michael Keenan at the winery.

It was by virtue of his hillside Napa Merlot that Robert Keenan planted his eponymous
winery squarely on the world’s wine map twenty years ago. Since then, a new generation
of ownership under his son has resulted in significant changes in vineyard practices,
varietal choices, and overall business philosophy that have propelled the producer
well into the modern era of premium winemaking. Although bolstering its reputation
in recent years through the crafting of fine wines from Cabernets Sauvignon and
Franc, Keenan Winery continues to produce Merlot of superb quality, threatening
to help bring the varietal back into vogue following its recent fall from market
popularity.

A diplomatic, inclusive, and compassionate man, Michael Keenan runs the winery he
inherited with a rather fresh emphasis on forging and maintaining relationships
with employees and industry colleagues alike. Combined with his ‘keen’ attention
to detail and overall business savvy, this has allowed the brand to flourish in
recent years through such forward-thinking changes in the vineyard as planting new
clones while mindful of site specificity and implementing practices in sustainability
that have seen measurable results. And yet even in their enthusiasm for change,
Keenan and his team have remained focused on producing wines that are truly reflective
of the local terroir, standing firmly in the winds of the past decade’s swaying
market trends. All the more inspiring was listening to him share the lessons he
has learned from raising vines and making wines that have enabled him to grow
