Cassandra C. Jones:

PULSE NYC

Baer Ridgway Exhibitions is pleased to announce a solo presentation of new work
by Cassandra C. Jones at PULSE Contemporary Art Fair, NYC, Booth B-15. Continuing
her investigation of contemporary photography in our remix culture, Jones presents
new digital prints and video loops.
Jones’ process involves collecting thousands of photographs – professional and amateur,
new and old, print and digital – from every image exchange imaginable. Jones is
constantly hunting, gathering and archiving images looking for correlations between
and trends within various genres and subcultures. The artist’s technique is an
indirect commentary on how photographs are constantly being shaped and reinterpreted
by their audiences. The end result brings together a variety of disciplines; photography,
collage, drawing and video for carefully considered compositions that depict a new
sense of purpose, meaning and investigation of the media.
“Cassandra C. Jones is a taxonomist of the image; she classifies its variations,
reliable patterns, and inclinations toward order. She obsessively accumulates digital
and print photographs and hones in on similarly cropped, angled, or composed depictions
of a particular subject.”
-Patricia Maloney, ARTFORUM
Highlighted in this solo presentation Jones unveils a new body of works appropriately
titled Balloon Prints where she collects photographs of hot air balloons and creates
compositions that are built through complex systems focused on line structure, shape
and radial forms, transforming the ubiquitous hot-air balloon into a kaleidoscopic
maze shape of color and pattern.
In addition, Jones presents new Lighting Drawing prints. This body of work began
in 2009 by Jones seeking out specific linear qualities found within photographs
of lightning bolts to use as a drawing tool. By overlapping dozens of images of
lighting strikes, Jones draws silhouettes of urban animals, dogs, rabbits and squirrels
often suspended in motion, unsettled in the night sky.
“Jones’ ‘Lightning Drawings’ revive in 21st century terms the old Surrealist notion,
with roots in psychoanalysis and mystical tradition, of a hidden order behind manifest
reality that only the right sort of decoding or shakeup can reveal.”
-Kenneth Baker, San Francisco Chronicle
As an extension to her static collages, the artist also reconfigures her appropriated
photographs in videos she calls “Snap Motion Re-Animations.” In these short loop
videos, Jones sets into action a variety of time based events by using culled images
of similar subjects. Jones’ most recent video piece hosts twelve photographs of
galloping horses that seem to trot across the screen in the looping sequence titled,
Daisy – After Muybridge. This new video pays homage to Eadweard Muybridge’s motion
studies. Although many of the “Snap Motion Re-Animations” require dozens, if not
several hundred found images, Jones has also mastered an innovative technique for
creating animations with a lone image, as found in her series called “Single Frame
Animations”, where she uses a single photograph of a flock of birds to animate a
bird in flight.
“By manipulating found, sourced, and collected images into photographic compositions
and animated video loops, Cassandra C. Jones has for several years exercised
a patient and painstaking approach to contemporary collage…at once a nod to
the digital landscape in which we find ourselves, and a plea, perhaps an imperative,
to create context amidst an endless expanse of images.”
-James Merle Thomas, Independent Curator
Cassandra C Jones received her BFA from California College of the Arts in San Francisco
and received her MFA from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. Since, Jones
has shown with the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, the
Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, The Chelsea Museum, New York, Mass MoCA, North
Adams, MA, the Portland Institute for Contemporary Arts, Oregon, the Pacific Northwest
College of Art’s Philip Feldman Gallery, and the Northwest Film Center in Portland,
