Hurricane Julaton plans to ‘fight fast’
LOS ANGELES – It’s a Wednesday night at the Wildcard Boxing Club, the crowd has
dwindled and female boxer WBO Super Bantamweight Champion Ana “The Hurricane”
Julaton is still going strong, hitting the blue heavy bag menacingly as trainer
Freddie Roach looks on.

Her face shows her focus. Her footwork is balanced. There’s a zip to her punch
as the heavy bag sways like a bag caught in the wind with each shot.

IN December of last year, Philippine President Benigno S. Aquino III bestowed the
Presidential Awards to 13 overseas Filipino individuals, seven organizations, three
foreigners and one foreign group for their continued compassion, diligence and
hard work, and efforts to help promote and uplift the image of the Philippines
here and abroad.

Among the awardees is Los Angeles native, Lillibeth Navarro.

Fil-Am teacher pleads no-contest for lewd act
LOS ANGELES – A former Fil-Am high school principal and volleyball coach was sentenced
to eight years in prison Friday for sexually molesting four female students.

Fil-Am Jonas Vital Silverio, 41, had pleaded no contest last July 8 to ten counts
of lewd act on a child 14 or 15.

Before sentencing, Judge John Cheroske said of Silverio, “although he acknowledged
wrongdoing, he made excuses to rationalize his behavior.”

Prosecutors allege the molestations occurred between 1996 and 2007, and three of
the girls he allegedly molested were in volleyball teams he coached at Firebaugh
High School.

Pinoy found guilty of Black Widow’s murder
TORRANCE – A jury only took three hours to convict Filipino Eric Santander Delacruz
and his Navy friend Fernando Romero in the 2007 slaying of a woman dubbed the Lomita
Black Widow.

Sonia Rios Risken earned the infamous nickname after being suspected of masterminding
the separate killings of her two husbands – Earl John Bourdeau, a former Marine,
and Larry Risken, a former Navy officer. The murders happened 19 years apart, both
in the Philippines.

Quasi hero

IN THE midst of the unfolding drama among the living (known as military corruption),
the dead have their own sub-plot of brewing conflict.

It’s enough to make former AFP Chief of Staff Angie Reyes stir in his grave.

After all, it was his controversial hero’s burial, replete with full military honors,
his father, former Pres. Ferdinand Marcos be buried among the bayanis of the land.
