research published today in the scientific journal ‘Science’ increases our understanding of Earth’s space environment and how space weather develops.
Researchers from the UCLA College of Letters and Science, the Austrian Space Research Institute (IWF Graz) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency
(JAXA) – report they finally have measured the release of magnetic energy using an unprecedented alignment of six Earth-orbiting spacecraft.
findings came as a surprise to scientists showing a far greater release of energy hitting Earth than realized. “The amount of power converted from
just one solar/galactic event in just 30 minutes was comparable to the electric power generation from all power plants on Earth.” said Vassilis
Angelopoulos, a professor in the UCLA Department of Earth, Planetary and Space Sciences, principal investigator for ARTEMIS and THEMIS, and lead
author of the research in Science.
magnetosphere shields Earth from radiated charged emitted by the Sun. Previous spacecraft observations of charged particles hitting Earth’s magnetic
field, measured only at a single point, was unable to assess global effects and observation lasting for a brief second.
Now,
with advanced spacecraft technology, comprising NASA’s THEMIS and NOAA’s GOES satellites – space agencies have finally been able to capture data

New Zealand Earthquake and Mantle Plume
Today’s
6.7-magnitude earthquake struck off the north shore of New Zealand located around the Kermadec Islands, but there is little chance of a Pacific-wide
tsunami, officials say. Based on all available data a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected.
Kermadec Islands are located roughly equal distance to New Zealand’s North Island and the Pacific nation of Tonga. The Tonga Trench is located in the
South Pacific Ocean where its deepest point is known as the Horizon Deep.
Tonga Trench has been identified as the fastest plate velocity recorded on the planet – this is a result of a mantle plume which lies underneath. The
Tonga Trench extends north-northeast from the Kermadec Islands north of the North Island of New Zealand. The trench turns west north of the Tonga

UPDATE:
I’m back in the house – but confined to my computer. :-(   Wife still pretty upset for spending money we had saved to take our 2nd
daughter “Sophia” (19 months) to see her grandmother for the first time who lives in Bulgaria. In addition to this boo boo – I’m upside down with
finances and running out of time for scheduling and commitments.
