Joe’s Weekly Message

Every day we introduce our families in one way or another. A picture
on a desk says “this is my family.” A wedding ring announces “I am
for a parent-teacher conference, buy a gym membership, and mail our
holiday cards.

It’s simple: we know who we love and who’s in our family.

That’s why it’s so infuriating that some people make a career
out of denying that same-sex couples’ love is even real. Foes of
marriage equality and other rights for same-sex couples don’t
just attack our access to legal protections; they try to redefine love
and marriage to exclude people they don’t like-us.

The latest example comes from-you guessed it-the National Organization
“for” Marriage (NOM), whose sole purpose is to stop same-sex couples
from marrying. NOM’s sister organization recently solicited people to
enter videos of what love means to them in a “Reel Love” contest. The
contest’s rules specified that the videos had to be about heterosexual
love.

NOM’s mission doesn’t stop at preventing marriage equality; they think
that they can exclude us from love itself. That’s not what they said
when they financed the ballot initiatives that stripped us of marriage
equality in Maine and California, but it’s what they mean.

NOM is an extreme example, but the fact is that opposition to marriage
equality, even among more fair-minded people, is based upon the
premise that our love is not equal. You can’t tell a same-sex couple
“you can’t be married” unless you believe that their love is less
valid than yours-or isn’t love at all.

Whatever rules NOM wants to play by, we are still going to show people
that our love is real. That’s why I’m so proud of this video we
submitted to the “Reel Love” contest. It shows what they don’t want
anyone to know – same-sex couples’ love is as real as
opposite-sex couples’ love. The contest rejected the video, but we
will get it out there. Our love is stronger than their games, and so
is our resolve.

Although we have a lot of work left to do in this country, we have the
freedom to live our lives and make our case in relative safety. Much
of the world is less safe. Thursday, Ugandan activist David Kato was
found murdered in his home. Kato had been listed as one of Uganda’s
“top 100 homosexuals” in an article that advised readers to hang the
people on the list. Fundamentalist ministers from the United States
have been cultivating an atmosphere of hate in Uganda, leading Kato
and others to state that they feared for their lives. Yesterday we
launched a petition calling on three high-profile American religious
leaders to stop exporting their religious-based bigotry. We hope that
you will lend your voice to this call for action. We will honor Kato’s
memory by continuing to fight those who – in the name of
religion – promote violence and oppression. David Kato was a
brave hero, and he will be missed.

P.S. The Obama-Biden Administration is still looking for accomplished
LGBT women and men to serve their country as executive branch
appointees. Whether you are a recent graduate or a seasoned
professional, if you have ever considered public service, now is the
time to share your expertise and give our community a voice at the
table. HRC has partnered with other LGBT advocacy organizations in the
Presidential Appointments Project, which  serves as a talent bank
for openly LGBT professionals seeking opportunities to improve our
federal government’s policies and processes.
