Great vintages of Côtes du Rhône are always in contention as the choices to give you the most bang-for-the-buck, and these three are all sensational picks.

2009 Andezon Côtes du Rhône ($9.99)

91 points Robert Parker: “The 2009 Domaine d’Andezon (90% Syrah and 10% Grenache) is a tank-fermented and aged, unfined/unfiltered cuvee made only for the American market from 50-year-old vines. It offers explosive notes of smoky bacon fat, cassis, and blackberries, a deep, rich, chewy style, and an exuberant, flashy personality. With unbelievable flavor intensity and personality for its price, it will provide plenty of pleasure over the next several years. This large cooperative south of Chateauneuf du Pape has been the source of some dazzling values over recent years.” (08/10) 14.5% abv.

2009 Domaine la Garrigue “Cuvée Romaine” Côtes du Rhône ($11.99)

92 points Robert Parker: “In 2009, the Cuvee Romaine, which has been a perennial winner in the values sweepstakes, was made from tiny yields of 20 hectoliters per hectare, and was aged in concrete before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. Just as strong as the 2007, the 2009 boasts a dense purple color along with a big, sweet bouquet of kirsch liqueur, licorice, and lavender. Full-bodied with stunning depth and richness as well as a long finish, this remarkable wine demonstrates what great winemaking and Southern Rhone varietals can achieve in a top vintage. Moreover, the price is ridiculously low for such high quality. A blend of 75% Grenache and 25% Syrah, it should age nicely for 4-6 years. This is a custom cuvee for the American market from importer Eric Solomon and oenologist Philippe Cambie. It is assembled by proprietor Maxime Bernard from his estate holdings in Gigondas and the Cotes du Rhone.” (08/10) 14.5% abv.

2007 E. Guigal Côtes du Rhône ($11.99)

90 points Robert Parker: “The 2007 Cotes du Rhone has finally been released, and Guigal has made his finest Cotes du Rhone to date, all from purchased juice. He and his son told me they go through thousands of samples in order to come up with this cuvee, which is based on 50% Syrah, 40% Grenache, and 10% Mourvedre, all aged in tank. A deep ruby/purple wine with lots of cassis, kirsch, pepper, and even an intriguing floral note, the wine is medium to full-bodied , silky smooth, and a truly delicious, hedonistic and intellectually satisfying wine that is a remarkable bargain. It should drink well for 2-4 years, as these wines can actually last.” (10/10) 14% abv. 90 points Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar: “55% syrah, 40% grenache and 5% mourvedre) Inky ruby. Intriguing, highly perfumed aromas of red- and blackcurrant, cherry, dried flowers and tobacco, with powerful spice and black olive accents; the syrah is center stage today. Graceful and focused, with sweet dark fruit and floral pastille flavors that coat the palate. Suave and gently sweet wine, with excellent clarity, length and a lingering floral quality. There will not be a 2008 bottling of this wine because Guigal wasn’t happy with the quality of fruit in the southern Rhone. There are 3.7 million bottles of this wine to go around.” (Jan/Feb 2011) 14% abv.
