CLOSING RECEPTION FOR

THE WANDERING FLOOD MOVES THROUGH US:

“The Wandering Flood Moves Through Us”

New paintings, drawings and installations by Chris Russell, James
Seevers, and Michael Louis Young

Closing: Saturday, January 29th, 6 – 9pm

Artist’s talk

“Ninety – nine percent of who you are is invisible and
untouchable.” – Buckminster Fuller

“A belief is like a guillotine, just as heavy, just as light. –
David Hockney

Oakland based curator Theo Konrad Auer and Fivepoints Arthouse
present: “The Wandering Flood Moves Through Us.” New paintings,
drawings and installations by Chris Russell, James Seevers, and
Michael Louis Young. Their work aims to further a dialogue about our
place in the natural order. All three artists use landscape to figure
out and communicate a personal ideology or outlook. A range of
philosophic and spiritual approaches to a world ever in flux come to
play in works that touch on the natural terrain we share, as well as
each artists’ internal mental terrain.

James Seevers’ work not only draws from a particularly personal space
inspired as much by the environs of San Mateo country as they are by a
deep interest in theoretical physics, philosophy and spirituality; his
work also promotes a critical dialogue on the points where those
inspirations intersect.

Although Chris Russell’s landscapes exist at various degrees of
abstraction, they reconcile personal experiences with borderline
utopian and spiritual views, sometimes inspired by the work and
writings of Buckminster Fuller. He takes cues from the appropriated
imagery of New Age culture with a bit of ironic reservation, but
mostly with the attempt to depict a genuine reverence for nature.

Michael Louis Young utilizes text wryly in much of his work with a
narrative more in the vein of John Baldessari than Ed Ruscha, and
crafts a sardonic world with as much specificity as ambiguity. Michael
confronts the ironic reservation head on, burying his genuine
sentiments in humorous insecurities and language and plays on the idea
of the myth of the American frontiersman, seeking ultimate freedom in
the rough outdoors, self-governing, and making a home for one’s self
in the world.

We would like to invite you to join in the conversation not only for
the opening, but also for an Artists’ talk to be scheduled during
the run of the show. Minimal, atmospheric soundscapes will be provided
by Ether Staircase at the opening, Fri. December 17th, which will run
from 7pm till 11pm.

Traditionally, galleries, critics and a host of other art
viewer. The process by which works of art make it to an exhibition is
long and often times quite mystical. For Aesthetic Anarchy, Fivepoints
Arthouse turns the whole process over to the artist. Participating
artists will bring in their work and be required to make decisions
about what gets displayed and how. Aesthetic Anarchy seeks to
challenge the traditional hierarchy of aesthetic arbitration by
creating a theoretical* system in which the gallery removes its
curatorial authority.

*With some obvious exceptions:

All work must be ready to hang.

Space is determined on a first come first served basis. One piece per
person- please.

You must return the space to the condition in which you found it.

No major architectural, structures will be altered.

Fivepoints Arthouse reserves the right to omit art pieces not aligned
with its goals and mission.

Fivepoints Arthouse is not responsible for works left at the gallery
past the deadline for pick up, without prior pick up arrangements.
