Verizon Wireless gives back to survivors of
domestic violence

A cell phone helps promote safety, security and freedom for domestic violence survivors.
HopeLine, by Verizon Wireless, makes this happen by refurbishing discarded, donated
cell phones and giving them to survivors of domestic violence.

“A cell phone is a lifeline for a domestic violence survivor,” says Maria Chavez,
Director of the St. Vincent de Paul Society’s Riley Center for Battered Women and
Their Children. “A common story we hear from our clients is how they are not allowed
to use the phone at home.” These women feel isolated and controlled and feel they
cannot get help and leave. The phones come to symbolize a first step in independence
and control survivors can assert over their lives.

Raymond Crowther has a lot to be thankful for

Raymond Crowther came to the St. VIncent de Paul Society’s Wellness Center a mere
five months ago. Those five months may as well been five years; the positive, articulate
man who stands before us today has become a role model for his peers undergoing
recovery.

“I love being of service,” says Crowther. “One of the greatest things I can do for
my sobriety is to help others. I talk to them, tell them about meetings and other
resources, and show them it can be done. Hey, if I can do it then anyone can!”

Crowther has made significant life changes over the past five months to achieve
a well-balanced, healthy lifestyle. “Recovery is everything to me,” Crowther says.
“Addiction is a symptom of corrupted thinking. I sought a spiritual balance to gain
control over this thinking to live a healthy life. I came to the Wellness Center
in desperation, and it has become a blessing.”

For those still suffering, Crowther offers this advice:

“Don’t ever give up! It doesn’t matter where you are in your recovery – one hour
or hundreds. Clarity will come about if you keep coming back!”

Hope is a Phone Call Away (continued)

HopeLine phones are given to women in all stages of recovery from abuse. “Not all
survivors leave their abuser and come to the shelter,” Chavez says. “Some may be
in the process of leaving to live with family or friends. It is in this transitional
stage that the women are so vulnerable – HopeLine phones could save their lives.”

Verizon Wireless HopeLine awarded the St. Vincent de Paul Society’s Riley Center
with a $5,000 grant last October, on top of providing refurbished cell phones to
all our clients.

“This program has truly been a blessing,” Chavez said. “We are so grateful for Verizon
Wireless’ support!”

What do you enjoy about working with the Society?

The people and the different types of projects. I mainly volunteer at the Help Desk,
but there are so many different things I can do, I always feel like I am learning
and it is a lot of fun. Whether it is serving dinner at the homeless shelter, helping
out during yoga and poetry classes at The Wellness Center, or giving clothes to
who need it most.

What is your favorite memory?

I enjoy all the times when I see a familiar face and that familiar face sees my
face as a familiar face. It makes me feel good because I feel like I am part of
my community and I think when a guest remembers me, they feel like they are part
of a community as well.
