Happy Easter! Open Today

Happy Easter
Easter is a time of renewal and rebirth. I hope its not stretching the metaphor
beyond recognition to offer our sincere thanks to all you for your support over
this last difficult stretch with the construction (It’s still not over!!!). Without
it we would not be around to have the opportunity for our own re-birth.
We will be open today and would like to help you have a memorable day. So, come
on down and say hello.
Tax Refund Sale Continues:

The Art of Nature:
RECLAIMED (Organic) Teak-Root Furniture
Note about Teak Root Stock: We are now sold out of chairs and art-stands. We have
three (??) benches and many coffee tables still remaining. Come and pick one out
before they’re gone!
Tectona Grandis, or teak, for those of you, like me, that are latin-challenged,
has long been prized for its durability, strength, hardness, and beauty. In fact,
teak has been so in-demand for buildings, ships, and anything else, that most of
the large stands of original old growth common in Southeast Asia were cut long
ago. (As an aside, most of the teak-wood decks that you see here in the U.S. are
of plantation-grown teak as it is relatively fast growing and easily cultivated.)
However, as a testament to its durability and indeed, its near permanence, extensive
fields of teak root systems and stumps remained, particularly on the Indonesian
island of Java (coffee, anyone???). A few short years ago, a cottage industry developed
around harvesting (digging up with great effort, really) these remnants and using
them for art, furniture, or whatever else, limited only by the craftsman’s imagination.
The first pieces of this that I saw were from a random shop and were finished somewhat
crudely. But even though I thought it might be of limited appeal, I decided to try
it because I loved the idea of something so beautiful being crafted of reclaimed
materials. Within weeks after arrival of the first few pieces 3-4 years ago, the
Indonesian-applied finish started fading, checking, and cracking and I was left
to sell it primarily for outdoors. Now that we have professional in-house capabilities,
I go to the source and select rough-hewn pieces. These pieces are then sculpted
and fine sanded by the local craftsmen so that we can apply the final finish ourselves.
For “house-inventory” we apply two different finishes-honey teak and ebony. But
the truth is, that since teak is such a light colored wood, almost any shade or
color could be applied (can you imagine a RED teak root bench??!!).
And, for a small up-charge, we can apply a marine finish that will preserve the
beauty and look of these pieces outdoors. Note though that if they are left outdoors
without any finish, they will neither fall apart nor seriously degrade within any
meaningful time-frame. In fact, they will turn a burnished silver-gray, which many
people find beautiful and reminiscent of the deck wood on finely crafted yacht.
Whatever the finish, the end result is an amazing example of the art of nature.
Granted, I am a little strange, but I find myself mesmerized by the tight and complex
grain of some of these finished pieces. Below is a series of photos of some of these
pieces “on the hoof” as it were and finished in our showroom. We will continue to
finish pieces as time allows but we suggest that you come in and choose your piece
AND your desired finish.
Our current stock includes many coffee tables, side tables, chairs, benches, and
even a couple of stunning console tables. If you want here it is, come and get
it!
“On the Hoof”…………………………………………………….Finito!

Unfinished Stump Cross-Section Organic* Coffee Table
*I have, up until now, resisted using the term “organic” to describe these pieces
as I feared it would make them irresistable to the good folks from Boulder. Sadly,
current market circumstances demand that we pull out all the stops. So, here it
goes. These are ORGANIC and SUSTAINABLE!. They really are!
