Reeling: The Chicago Lesbian & Gay International Film Festival

Chicago Filmmakers is seeking a dynamic new Director of Reeling: The Chicago Lesbian
& Gay International Film Festival. Founded in 1981, Reeling is the second-oldest
LGBTQ film festival in the world. Building on the festival’s 30-year history, we
are looking for a creative and visionary leader who will solidify and further develop
Reeling’s status as a vital Chicago cultural event and lead us into the next vibrant
phase of the festival’s evolution.

STATUS: This is a full-time year-round position.

SUPERVISION: The Festival Director performs all duties and responsibilities subject
to the supervision of Chicago Filmmakers’ Executive Director.

SUPERVISES: The Festival Director hires and supervises seasonal festival staff,
and recruits and supervises interns and volunteers to help carry out many of the
duties outlined in the job description below.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES: The Festival Director plans, oversees, programs, and
manages all aspects of the annual Reeling Film Festival, as well as other Reeling
events throughout the year. The Festival Director is responsible for the artistic
quality of Reeling; ensures that the festival and related events are well attended;
and sees to the overall operations and financial success of the festival. The Director
must have an understanding and passion for Reeling’s mission and its commitment
to the LGBTQ community.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Festival Coordination & Management: Execute a timeline and workplan for the management
of the festival and ensure that festival operates smoothly and deadlines are met.

* Human Resources: Recruit and supervise seasonal staff, interns, and volunteers.

* Programming: Oversee all aspects of programming the festival, both curatorial
and administrative, including working with volunteer programming committees.

* Filmmaker Relations: Build and maintain professional relationships with filmmakers.

* Hospitality & Travel: Oversee the coordination of guest filmmaker/actor travel
and local transportation, and ensure a positive experience for visiting filmmakers.

* Fundraising: Work closely with the ED and board in executing fundraising efforts
that include sponsorships, memberships, individual and business donations, ad sales,
and fundraising events.

* Sponsorship Coordination: Research, outreach to, and negotiate with sponsors;
see to the fulfillment of sponsor agreements.

* Festival Advisory Board: Assist the Reeling committee of the board of directors
in recruiting and managing members of the Advisory Board.

* Special Events: Organize and secure the resources necessary for festival galas,
receptions, and other festival events and fundraising events.

* Publicity: Develop and guide Reeling’s public relations efforts to ensure media
coverage of the festival.

book and printed schedule, including writing copy, coordinating advertising, and
working with the graphic designer and printer.

* Outreach to cultural and community partners to co-produce screenings and events.

* Box Office/Accreditation: Oversee the management of ticketing and guest accreditation.

* Venue/House Management: Secure venues for screenings, parties, and other festival
events, and oversee the management of venue operations.

* Technical Management:Secure equipment and technical personnel needed for projection
and production of festival screenings and events.

* Other: Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Chicago Filmmakers’

EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIRED:

* B.A. or advanced degree.

* Strong leadership skills.
* Excellent project coordination, time management, and organizational skills with
the ability to juggle and prioritize multiple projects.

* Attention to detail and concern for accuracy.

level of motivation, a strong sense of urgency when needed, the ability to work
without direct supervision and to consistently meet deadlines.

* Ability to troubleshoot, to achieve conflict resolution, and to work calmly under
pressure. A creative thinker who is resourceful in solving problems.

and teamwork among staff and volunteers.

* Proven record of excellence and achievement in film exhibitions and/or film festivals.

* Fundraising experience, including managing fundraising events and generating donations
and sponsorships.

* Excellent written and oral communication skills. Experience in writing film blurbs.

* Strong knowledge of the independent film industry, preferably with already established
relationships with film distributors and filmmakers.

* Knowledge of technical formats for film and digital video projection.

* Must be flexible and willing to work long hours or weeknights and weekends when
necessary.

* Ability to supervise and delegate, but when necessary, willingness to “get in
the trenches and do whatever is needed to get the job done.”

* Ability to lift 40 lbs. and to sit or stand at a computer for long periods of
time.

* Mac proficient with knowledge of Filemaker Pro, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and
