“Semioptics for Spinoza” is the fourth installation from Lozano-Hemmer’s Shadow
Object series, which features mobile objects with live, synthetic shadows. In this
piece, a large plano-convex lens, similar to those made by Baruch Spinoza for Huygens’
telescopes, is suspended from a thread and rotates slowly. Projected on the wall
behind the lens are artificial lens flares, generated by equations taking into

a tool of atomic nano-scale precision. Each segment of engraved hair was then photographed
by an electron microscope and placed in a test tube beside a certificate from the
Brockhouse Institute for Materials Research and bound by an aluminum frame.

Lozano-Hemmer’s smaller scaled text-based works “There Is No Business Like No Business
also will be appearing at the stand.
