CALLING ALL BAKERS!
CBS has called our Market one of the best in the city, and they figured it was a
good place to find the best bakers too!
On December 8th CBS will be looking for Amateur Bakers in Chicago for a new competition
baking series. Skilled amateur bakers will compete against one another in baking
challenges that will test every aspect of their baking skills. At the end of the
competition, one baker will be crowned the winner. The series follows the trials
and tribulations of competitors from every background and every corner of the
United States as they attempt to prove their baking prowess.
CBS is seeking all types of non-professional bakers from across the country. Whether
you’re an athlete, teacher, truck driver or retiree, you just have to have the
zest for baking.

The hustle and bustle of the season is upon us! There’s a lot going on at the Market
and all around town. There will be lots of good shopping to be done this Sunday
at the Market. This opportunity to shop from folks you know, growing and making
their wares themselves, from the best materials possible is a lovely antidote to
the Black Friday/Cyber Monday/You-Bought-What Wednesday frenzy.
There are lots of opportunities this time of year to buy and give gifts that connect
you and your loved ones to the broader community as well as each other. Check out
this Tuesday evening at Goose Island’s Brewpub on Clybourn where you’ll find vendors
from our Market and elsewhere.
And if you don’t make it out to those events, never fear, the Market will be back
next Sunday. Happy shopping!
Sincerely,
Megan Larmer
Logan Square Farmers Market Manager

is an eco friendly business based right here in Logan Square, making creative
design activities for kids ages 5-12. Our activities range from doll houses to
activity sheets that inspire young imaginations. We will have a special sampling
of products at the Logan Square Farmers market especially for the holidays.

AT THE COMMUNITY TABLE

community members will be assembling gift baskets of the items you buy at the Market
in exchange for donations.

They’ll also be offering gift wrapping services, so bring your holiday gifts
and they’ll wrap them up. Handmade holiday cards will be for sale there, too.

This is a fundraiser benefiting the mission and ministries of the Church of the
Advent. Proceeds benefit the Chuch’s community outreach programs such as their
Saturday lunch program for the homeless population of Logan Square and a planned
warming center.

Look for them the Sundays of December 2, 9, and 16.

The Church of the Advent is located at 2900 West Logan Boulevard, the corner of
Logan and Francisco Street.

MUSIC ON THE STAIRS

and he’s back this week for an encore. Neil is a solo classical guitarist and longtime
Logan Square resident. His specialty is guitar music of Latin America, stemming
from his 9 year apprenticeship with Chilean master guitarist Alfonso Chacon. Neil
performs a mix of great popular, folkloric and classical works throughout Chicagoland.
He can also be seen in his new group Los Alquimistas, which deftly mixes styles
from throughout the Americas.

VENDOR NEWS

is hosting an open house
in their offices from 10am to 4pm on December 1 as part of Logan Square’s “Holidays
on the Square”. Everyone is invited to their new heirloom headquarters to create
heirloom holiday ornaments using natural materials such as beans, lentils, apples
and cloves, while sipping on a steamy cup of apple cider and nibbling on a few holiday
snacks. To round up the offering of gifting ideas, Urban Angel and La Pucara Jewelry
Collections will be presenting their selections of fair trade, artisan jewelry and
accessories from Ecuador, India and China. Of course, you will also have the chance
to browse the full line of Scrumptious Pantry items. This event is kid friendly,
so please bring them along! And while you are in the neighborhood, please check
out all the other events the Logan Square businesses have been putting together
for “Holidays on the Square”! Then spend the evening supporting …
at the 10th annual holiday bazaar at the new Ignite Glass Studios (the new home
for our Co-op Glassworks program). Live music with Environmental Encroachment and
El is the Sound of Joy, great food from our friends at the Sauce and Bread Kitchen
fantastic beer from Revolution Brewing and of course, live glass blowing.

$15 suggested donation goes directly to another 10 years of Co-op Image’s innovative
and scrappy community arts projects.

When: Saturday, December 1, 5:00-10:00 PM
Where: Ignite Glass Studios 401 North Armour Street, Chicago, IL (312) 465-2389.
(Armour is one block east of Ashland).

We’ll always be able to say we were fans before they made it big …
I thought I had bought enough food to feed the 13 folks who came for Thanksgiving
and to last for a couple of weeks beyond, but, it turns out, not so! The fruit’s
that our farmers and producers all had the chance to take an extra day off, thank
goodness they’ll be back this Sunday, so I can stock up again.
I have to tell you that one of the big successes at my Thanksgiving table were the
braised greens. Lots of compliments! Since the weather’s been fairly mild, I think
you’ll find fresh ones on more than one farmer’s table this week, so I’ll share
my recipe. These quantities will give you 4 to 6 generous servings.
4 Tablespoons unsalted butter
Half a medium or large onion, sliced thin
2 1/2 pounds of mixed greens (kale, mustard, turnip, collard, chard, etc.)
1 cup chicken broth
1 Tablespoon brown sugar, light or dark
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
2 Tablespoons cider vinegar
Rinse the greens, cut off any thick ribs and stems, tear or slice the leaves into
medium size pieces and set aside. Melt half the butter in a big heavy pot or dutch
oven and cook the onion in it until it’s soft. Add about half the greens (enough
to fill the pot) and the other ingredients except the vinegar and remaining butter.
Cook over medium heat until the greens are wilted (stir them a bit; it won’t take
very long) and then add the rest of the greens, stirring and mixing everything again
until you can put the lid on the pot. Cook over low/medium heat, stirring occasionally,
until the greens are tender, which should be about 20 to 30 minutes. Take the lid
off and keep cooking until most of the liquid is gone. Take off the heat, stir
in the remaining butter and the vinegar. Serve.
I think you’ll like it, and you can tell me how it worked for you when I see you
at the Market!
