Devil Land Opens Friday! We're still here! Our apologies for the brief disappearing act. We have been extremely busy and can't wait to share the exciting things we have in store. As we push forward toward our 9th anniversary in May, I realize that UrbanTheater is currently experiencing growing pains, but that isn't stopping us from continuing to create compelling and fearless professional storefront theater in the community of Humboldt Park. We conclude season eight with the Midwest Premiere of Desi Moreno- Penson's Devil Land, directed by Hank Hilbert and co-directed by Juan Castañeda. Synopsis: "A childless, Latino couple kidnap a young girl in order to create a family...but the little girl has ideas of her own...and when her imaginary friend, the Grinch, comes to life to help her, the couple ends up with far more than they bargained for! A dark and gothic fairy tale for the contemporary world." Location: 2628 W. Division St. Performances: Thursdays - Saturday at 7:30pm and Sunday at 6pm Previews: March 4th, 5th & 6th - $10 General Admission: $20 Students: $15 Seniors: $10 Community Discount: $10 with 60622 Zip Code (must show ID) Featuring: Ensemble members Jasmin Cardenas & Mike Cherry with Christian Castro & Tricia Rodriguez Christian Castro as Americo and Jasmin Cardenas Beatriz Jasmin Cardenas as Beatriz and Tricia Rodriguez as Destiny A Quote From The Playwright "UrbanTheater intuitively understands that theater must have resonance beyond the people in the room...that there is always a conversation going on between the actors on stage and the audience. And hopefully, the story that is presented to them, will shake them up, stimulate or move them enough, so that when the play's over, they will walk out continuing the story...they will talk about it and bring it to others within the community...friends, family members, loved ones. The fact that they are producing work that is in English gives much-needed credence and voice to second, third, and possibly, fourth generation Latino writers born and raised in the U.S....writers like myself for whom English has been the most dominant language. And unapologetically so...as a second-generation, Nuyorican playwright, it's great knowing that a company like UrbanTheater has my artistic back.
